Scenario 05
Product-based small business

When a rebrand changes everything.

Services that applied:
Business Liquidation

A small business owner had built a successful company selling products to a growing customer base. Business was going well, and as sales increased, the owner invested in more stock and expanded the operation.

Then came the decision to take the business to the next level.

A new marketing team was brought in. The company developed a new website, a new brand and a completely different look. The intention was to attract new customers and create a more modern business.

Unfortunately, the change had the opposite effect.

When customers stopped buying

After the new brand and website were launched, sales started to decline. Even some of the company's existing customers stopped buying.

The customers were familiar with the old brand. They knew the website, trusted the company and understood what they were buying. The new direction changed too much, too quickly.

The business tried to recover, but sales continued to fall. Stock had already been purchased and the company still had outstanding expenses and business debt.

Eventually, the business could no longer continue and had to proceed with liquidation.

The Debt Company assisted with the full liquidation process, including helping the owner deal with outstanding SARS obligations and other business debt.

Fortunately, the owner had not signed personal surety for the company's debts. This meant that, after dealing with the liquidation, he was able to look at starting again and building a new business.

The takeaway

This kind of scenario is a reminder that even a growing business can experience serious financial problems after a major business decision goes wrong. Sometimes a business liquidation is not the end of the business owner's journey — it can be the end of one company and the beginning of something new.
